A personalised storybook puts a specific child at the centre of their own story — their name, sometimes their likeness, woven through a book built around a theme they already love. For a child who is used to being a side character in the books read to them, seeing their own name on the page is a genuinely different experience to a standard picture book, and it's why personalised storybooks have become one of the most requested gifts for young kids.
What makes it "personalised"
At minimum, a personalised storybook uses the child's name and often their age, worked into the story itself rather than just printed on a cover sticker. Depending on the title, it may also draw on a photo you provide to influence how the main character is illustrated, so the book feels built around that specific child rather than generic.
This is different from a book that's simply dedicated to a child (a name printed on the first page of an otherwise identical book) — in a genuinely personalised storybook, the name and details are part of the story text itself.
Choosing a story your child will actually love
The theme matters more than the format. Before choosing a title, think about:
- What they're already into — dinosaurs, space, animals, fairytales. A personalised book about a theme a child already loves lands far better than a generic "personalised book" bought for the novelty alone.
- Their age — a book pitched at 2–3 year olds (simple sentences, big illustrations) reads very differently from one aimed at 5–6 year olds who can follow a fuller story.
- Who's reading it — books meant to be read aloud by a parent work differently from books an early reader will attempt themselves.
How the process works
You provide the child's name and the relevant details for the title you've chosen (age, and a photo where the book supports it), and the storybook is generated and produced to order — it isn't a pre-printed stock item. Because of that, allow around 7–10 business days for production before dispatch, on top of standard delivery time within Australia. If the book is for a specific occasion — a birthday, a new-baby gift — order with that production window in mind rather than assuming it will arrive within a few days.
Because each copy is generated specifically for the child named on it, personalised storybooks can't be returned for change of mind once production has started. If a copy arrives damaged, misprinted, or with the wrong name or details due to a production error, ToyGenie will arrange a reprint or refund at no cost — see the Refund Policy for full details.
Softcover or hardcover
Where a title is offered in both formats, softcover suits a book that will be read frequently and handled by the child themselves, while hardcover holds up better as a keepsake that's kept rather than read to destruction — a reasonable default for a first-birthday or christening-style gift that's likely to be kept long after the child has outgrown reading it themselves.
Frequently asked questions
What details do I need to provide?
At minimum the child's name; some titles also use age and a photo. The exact fields depend on the specific book.
How long does it take?
Allow roughly 7–10 business days for production, plus standard delivery time within Australia.
Can I fix a typo after ordering?
Contact support as soon as possible after ordering — once a book has entered production, changes may not be possible, so it's worth double-checking spelling before confirming.
What if there's a mistake in the printed book?
If the error is on ToyGenie's side (wrong name or detail printed despite correct information supplied), a reprint or refund will be arranged at no cost.
